Pet First Aid Course Offered by Red Cross &
Humane Society
Your pet depends on you for his or her
well-being. In addition to providing daily care,
love and affection, your best friend depends on
you in an emergency. Whether your pet becomes
ill or injured, or needs help in a disaster, the
American Red Cross and the Humane Society have
joined together to provide a class to help.
The goal of Pet First Aid is to protect both the
pet and the owner from further harm, injury or
suffering during emergencies by teaching prompt,
effective actions that will safeguard the life
of the injured pet. "We can dial 911 for people.
This class substitutes as 911 for pets," said
Kathy Hodge, Executive Director of the Humane
Society.
Pet First Aid teaches cat and dog owners how to
respond to a wide range of animal emergencies,
from dressing a wound to performing CPR to
preparing pets for natural disasters. Pet lovers
also learn how to monitor their furry
companion's well being by educating themselves
on their pet's normal temperature, blood
pressure, and other health parameters.
The course, taught by Red Cross First Aid
Instructor Shawn Maxwell, includes use of an
instructional DVD and opportunities to practice
first aid and CPR skills. All participants need
to bring a stuffed animal, preferably a dog or
cat, for demonstration purposes.
