American Red Cross and Red Crescent Response Haiti Earthquake Relief Efforts
(January 15, 2010) Three days ago, a catastrophic earthquake struck Haiti causing devastation to millions primarily in the country’s capital city, Port-au-Prince. The urban infrastructure in Port-au-Prince is severely damaged. Government and international organization buildings including hospitals, embassies, UN agencies and Red Cross have been greatly damaged. The official number of people affected is still unknown, but it is estimated to be approximately 3 million people. The Port-au-Prince airport is open day and night for military and humanitarian flights. The Port-au-Prince port remains closed until January 18. Access by land from Santo Domingo remains the easiest route into Haiti for humanitarian organization staff.  More...

Upcoming Fundraising Events
The Calloway County Chapter is in the process of planning our 2010 Heroes Campaign for March 1st through May 4th. Our goal is $20,000. We will start forming teams on Saturday, February 13th at the 2nd Annual Community Wide "Love Your Heroes" Pancake Breakfast at Culver's Restaurant. The money raised from this breakfast will go toward the chapter’s goal.

On April 16th our chapter, with the help of Murray State University Students, will have a lock-in for middle school students. The former Lock-In event will be combined with activities from the former Tea Party Event. This will be a $6,000 fundraiser in which not only middle school aged students, but also their parents and the community will get involved in furthering the chapter's efforts in Disaster Preparedness.

If you would like to get involved in the planning of either or both of these events, please contact the Executive Director, Jennifer Wilson. After the committees are formed and the preliminary meetings are held, Shelly Winters will be joining Wilson this year to coordinate the volunteer's involvement of these events.

In an emergency the Vial of Life will speak for you when you can't!
